Inter Milan Claims Narrow Victory Over Atletico Madrid In Champions League
In a closely contested Champions League last-16 first leg, Inter Milan secured a slender 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, courtesy of a second-half goal from substitute Marko Arnautovic. The match, held on the evening of February 20, 2024, at the San Siro, saw the former Stoke and West Ham forward breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute, much to the delight of the home supporters.
The game's only goal was enough for Inter Milan, last season's runners-up, to carry an advantage into the second leg in Madrid. The match was not without its moments of tension, as Atletico Madrid managed to fend off penalty claims for a handball by defender Nahuel Molina earlier in the game.

The first half was tightly contested with Lautaro Martinez missing an opportunity to put Inter ahead in the 36th minute. Despite this, Martinez continued to threaten Atletico's goal, forcing a save from goalkeeper Jan Oblak shortly after his initial miss. Marcus Thuram's injury towards the end of the first half led to Arnautovic's introduction, who after a couple of missed opportunities, found the back of the net.
Atletico Madrid had their chances too, with Alvaro Morata coming close in the latter stages of the game. However, it was Inter who emerged victorious on a night that also served as an emotional tribute to former player Andreas Brehme, whose passing was announced earlier that day.
Brehme, a former Germany international defender who played for Inter Milan from 1988 to 1992, was remembered before kick-off, adding a poignant note to the evening's proceedings. As both teams look ahead to the second leg next month in Madrid, Inter Milan will be hoping to build on their narrow lead and progress further in the competition.
