Ian Maatsen Called Up To Netherlands Squad For Euro 2024, Replacing Injured Koopmeiners
Ian Maatsen will join the Netherlands' Euro 2024 squad following injuries that have sidelined two key midfielders. Frenkie de Jong, who suffered an ankle injury while playing for Barcelona in April, has been officially replaced by Maatsen. The Netherlands confirmed de Jong's absence due to the severity of his injury.
In Oranje's final friendly before the tournament, a 4-0 victory over Iceland on Monday, Teun Koopmeiners was forced to withdraw from the starting line-up after sustaining a muscle injury during the warm-up. The Netherlands announced Koopmeiners' withdrawal from Euro 2024 in a post on X on Tuesday. "Teun Koopmeiners misses Euro 2024. The midfielder won't be able to participate after injuring himself during the warm-up of the match against Iceland yesterday. We're thinking of you, Teun," read the post.

Maatsen will join Oranje's training camp in Wolfsburg later today. The 22-year-old's initial exclusion from the squad had raised some eyebrows, especially after his impressive performance with Borussia Dortmund in the 2023-24 season. Maatsen joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in January, making 23 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
The Netherlands will kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland in Group C on Sunday. They will then face France and Austria in their subsequent group matches.
