Veteran Mats Hummels Secures Borussia Dortmund's Spot In Champions League Final

Mats Hummels emerged as the pivotal figure for Borussia Dortmund, propelling them into the Champions League final with a crucial goal against Paris Saint-Germain. In a tightly contested match in Paris, Hummels' header in the second half secured a 1-0 victory for Dortmund, culminating in a 2-0 aggregate win. This triumph was underscored by the youthfulness of PSG's squad, which, with an average age of 24 years and 157 days, was the youngest ever in a Champions League semi-final since Arsenal's lineup in May 2009.

Hummels' decisive goal marked his first in the Champions League for Dortmund since February 2013. At 35 years and 143 days old, he became the third oldest scorer in a Champions League semi-final, joining the ranks of Ryan Giggs and Edin Dzeko. This goal ended a drought for Hummels, being his first in the competition in 42 matches since scoring for Bayern Munich against Ajax in October 2018.

Hummels Sends Dortmund to Final

Paris Saint-Germain's quest for Champions League success was once again thwarted, despite numerous opportunities to alter the match's outcome. Kylian Mbappe's efforts, including hitting the crossbar, epitomized PSG's frustrations as they failed to convert their chances, hitting the woodwork four times during the match. This loss added to PSG's disappointing record in UEFA Champions League semi-finals, where they have now lost six out of seven matches.

PSG's campaign was notable for their misfortune with hitting the frame of the goal, doing so 14 times throughout the season - a record since data collection began in the 2003-04 season. Despite amassing an expected goals (xG) tally of 3.2 in this match, PSG joined a rare statistic of teams failing to score despite an xG of at least 3.0.

Dortmund's victory by identical 1-0 scorelines in both legs of a Champions League semi-final mirrored their achievement against Manchester United in the 1996-97 season. This win marks Dortmund's third appearance in a Champions League final, with their last appearance in 2013 ending in defeat to Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium. As they advance to the final once more, Dortmund could potentially face their German rivals again, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown.
