Hojbjerg Secures Move To Marseille On Loan Amid Tottenham Rebuild
Tottenham Hotspur have announced that midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has moved to Marseille. The Danish international, who played 184 games for Spurs, will initially join the Ligue 1 club on loan. This agreement includes a mandatory purchase clause worth £17 million.
During his four-year stint with Tottenham, Hojbjerg scored 10 goals. One of these goals was crucial in securing top spot in Group D of the Champions League against his new team, Marseille, back in 2022. Despite making 39 appearances under Ange Postecoglou last season, he started only 10 matches.
Hojbjerg had entered the final year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His transfer to Marseille makes him Roberto De Zerbi's fifth signing of the current transfer window. The move is part of Postecoglou's ongoing efforts to reshape the squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
The departure of Hojbjerg marks the seventh player exit from Tottenham this summer. Other players who have left include Joe Rodon, Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Ivan Perisic, Japhet Tanganga, and Ryan Sessegnon. These moves are part of a broader strategy to refresh the team.
Tottenham have shown interest in acquiring new talent as well. They are reportedly keen on Chelsea's Conor Gallagher and Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey. These potential signings indicate Spurs' intent to strengthen their squad for the 2024-25 season.
"We have reached agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the loan of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for the 2024/25 season, with an obligation that would see the move become permanent," read an official statement from Tottenham Hotspur.
