Republic Of Ireland Announces Heimir Hallgrimsson As New Head Football Coach

The Republic of Ireland has appointed Heimir Hallgrimsson as their new head coach. The former manager of Iceland and Jamaica will lead the team in the upcoming Nations League and 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He will be officially introduced at a press conference on Thursday.

Hallgrimsson resigned from his position with Jamaica 10 days ago after the Reggae Boyz were eliminated from the Copa America group stages. He takes over from John O'Shea, who served as interim coach following Stephen Kenny's departure last November.

Alongside Lars Lagerbeck, Hallgrimsson led Iceland to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, where they famously defeated England. Later, he guided Iceland to their first-ever World Cup appearance in 2018. His experience and achievements make him a valuable addition to the Irish team.

He is only the second head coach for Ireland from outside the UK and Ireland, following Giovanni Trapattoni. Hallgrimsson's first match in charge will be against England in the Nations League on September 7.
