Harry Kane Defends Performance, Calls For Support From Pundits At Euro 2024

Harry Kane has affirmed his fitness and readiness for Euro 2024, addressing recent scrutiny from pundits. The England captain, who plays for Bayern Munich, was substituted in the second half during England's 1-1 draw with Denmark on Tuesday. Despite scoring after just 18 minutes, Kane has struggled to make a significant impact in Germany.

Kane's performance has been under the microscope, especially after England's narrow 1-0 win over Serbia. The former Tottenham striker has only managed two touches in the opposition box at Euro 2024, matching the totals of Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold. This led to criticism from former players-turned-pundits, including Gary Lineker, who questioned Kane's tendency to drop deep.

Kane Responds to Euro 2024 Criticism

In response, Kane acknowledged the comments but urged pundits to consider their influence. "I'd never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially a player who's worn the shirt and knows what it's like to play for England," Kane said at a press conference before Tuesday's match against Slovenia.

Kane emphasized that ex-players now working as pundits should remember their responsibility. "It's very hard not to listen to it now, especially for some players who are not used to it or some players who are new to the environment," he noted. He stressed that while honesty is important, so is building confidence among current players.

Harry Kane is only the third player to score in four separate major tournaments for England (2018 World Cup, EURO 2020, 2022 World Cup, EURO 2024), following Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. Despite this achievement, his off-the-ball influence remains a topic of debate regarding Gareth Southgate's tactics.

"People do care about what they say and people do listen to them," Kane added. He pointed out that many former players understand the challenges of playing in major tournaments and should use their platform to support current players positively.

Kane has scored five goals in his last six European Championship appearances. Only Wayne Rooney (six) and Alan Shearer (seven) have scored more goals for England in this competition. Additionally, Kane is one of three players to score in four separate major tournaments for England.

Kane addressed his early withdrawal against Denmark by stating his commitment to giving everything he has for however long he plays. "If it's 70 minutes, if it's 90 minutes, if it's extra time, I physically feel more than capable of doing any of that," he said.

The England skipper expressed confidence in his fitness and readiness. "I've done that my whole career and I've done that for pretty much the whole season as well. I'm feeling fresh and I'm feeling fit," he stated.

Kane acknowledged that sometimes poor performances are simply part of the game. "I know sometimes when I've had bad games or games not up to the standard, there's always something to look for and find a reason why," he explained. He emphasized that such scrutiny is heightened in a tournament setting but remains confident in his abilities.

"The important thing is that from me personally, I feel fit, I feel ready and I'll play as long as the manager wants me to play," Kane concluded.
