Griezmann Labels Giroud As 'Ideal Team Player' Before Final Match
Antoine Griezmann has praised his France team-mate Olivier Giroud as the ideal team player ahead of the 37-year-old's final home international fixture on Sunday. Les Bleus will conclude their Euro 2024 preparations with a friendly match against Canada in Bordeaux, before heading to Germany for their Group D opener against Austria.
The tournament will be Giroud's last for his country, as the former Arsenal striker confirmed he would retire from international football at the end of the competition. Giroud aims to add to his 57 goals, making him France's all-time top scorer. A move to the United States is imminent for the 2018 World Cup winner, who will officially join LAFC when the MLS transfer window opens on July 18.

Speaking ahead of their fixture against Jesse Marsch's side, Griezmann lauded his team-mate's contribution to the national side. "Giroud said that's his last dance; I hope tomorrow there's something special for him," Griezmann stated. "He's a man who deserves recognition. To be the player he has been—that's him. He's the ideal player for a group, for a coach. I have total respect for him and what he's done."
Upcoming Friendly Against Canada
This will be France's first game against Canada since the 1986 World Cup. Head coach Didier Deschamps expects a more challenging test than last Wednesday when France beat Luxembourg 3-0 in Metz. Griezmann acknowledged the difficulty his side faces, saying, "We need to see if we're ready, tactically, offensively, defensively. This is going to give us some confidence before the big tournament."
Canada's Rising Profile
Griezmann also noted Canada's improvement in football: "They have players who are increasingly present here in Europe, so the game is improving over there. They have renowned players; it's a good test for us." The friendly match will serve as an important gauge for France as they prepare for Euro 2024.
Giroud leaves Milan after a three-year stint, having scored 48 goals in 132 appearances—the second-most he has managed for a single club behind Arsenal. As he prepares for his final international matches, Giroud remains focused on contributing to his team's success.
The friendly against Canada will be held at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux and is expected to be an emotional farewell for Giroud from French fans. The match offers an opportunity for Les Bleus to fine-tune their strategies and build confidence ahead of their Euro 2024 campaign.
