USA Sacks Gregg Berhalter As Head Coach Following Copa America Departure
Gregg Berhalter has been dismissed as the USA head coach after their early exit from the Copa America on home soil. The USA started strong in Group C, securing a 2-0 victory against Bolivia. However, they suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Panama and a narrow 1-0 loss to Uruguay, finishing third and missing out on the knockout stages.
Berhalter was initially appointed in December 2018, becoming the first American to coach the team after playing for them in the World Cup. He led the USA to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup before his contract expired at the end of that year. He was rehired in June 2023.

During his two tenures, Berhalter guided the team to three Concacaf Nations League titles in 2020, 2023, and 2024. Under his leadership, the team won 44 out of 74 games.
The team's performance in Copa America raised doubts about Berhalter's future despite expectations he would lead them at the 2026 World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. The disappointing results ultimately led to his immediate dismissal.
"Gregg Berhalter has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately," U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team announced on Twitter.
Berhalter's departure marks a significant change for the team as they prepare for future competitions. His contributions over two spells have left a notable impact on U.S. soccer.
The search for a new head coach will be crucial as the USA aims to build a competitive squad for upcoming tournaments, including the co-hosted World Cup in 2026.
