Graham Potter Ready For Football Management Comeback, Salutes Southgate
Graham Potter has expressed his eagerness to return to football management but refrained from commenting on rumours linking him to the vacant England job. The former Chelsea manager has been out of work since April 2023, following a seven-month tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Potter began his managerial career with Ostersund in Sweden, where he led the team from the fourth tier to the top flight and into the Europa League over seven years. He then spent a season with Swansea City before enjoying a successful three-year period with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Speaking at Leeds Beckett University, where he received an honorary doctorate, Potter shared his enthusiasm for returning to management. "Now, I'm in that good place where I'm happy to be ready and looking forward to the next challenge," he told Sky Sports. "I've had a great break."
Potter emphasised the importance of taking time off after his demanding career journey. "The journey from where I started to where I finished doesn't come for free," he said. "It involves moving to three countries, with a young family, and all that comes with being a football manager."
He used this break to reflect and re-energise, exploring other sports and teams. "It's been a good time to look at other things, other sports, other teams and visit places," Potter added. "I feel really ready, really excited to be back when the right opportunity comes."
Speculation About England Job
Potter is among several candidates linked with replacing Gareth Southgate as England's head coach. Southgate resigned after England's Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain. Despite the speculation, Potter chose not to discuss the possibility of taking over.
"Today is not the day to speak about [the England vacancy]," he stated. However, he praised Southgate's tenure: "I'm proud of the job Gareth Southgate did. As an Englishman in football, I don't think there's anybody who has more respect than he has; how he conducted himself, him and his staff."
Praising Gareth Southgate
Potter acknowledged Southgate's achievements in leading England to successive European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final during his eight-year spell. "Qualifying for tournaments, going deep into tournaments, getting the country behind the team—he's done an amazing job," Potter said.
"I'd like to wish him well," Potter continued. "I hope he has a nice break and wish him well for whatever he decides to do next." This sentiment reflects Potter's respect for Southgate's contributions and achievements as England's head coach.
