Leroy Sane Eyes Impactful Performance Against Spain In Euro 2024 Quarter-Final

Leroy Sane aims to emulate the influence of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams when Germany faces Spain in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on Friday. Germany advanced by defeating Denmark 2-0, while Spain triumphed over Georgia 4-1 after an early setback. Spain's young wingers, Yamal and Williams, have been standout performers in the tournament.

Sixteen-year-old Yamal made history by becoming the youngest player to feature in a Euros match during the group stage against Croatia. He assisted Fabian Ruiz against Georgia, making him the first teenager with multiple assists at the Euros since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004. Williams scored a remarkable solo goal on Sunday, becoming the first player at the Euros (since 1980) to score, assist, and complete all his passes (46/46) in a game he started.

Sane Targets Impact in Germany-Spain Clash

Yamal ranks joint-third for dribbles completed at Euro 2024 with 11, while Williams is joint-seventh with nine. Yamal also ranks fifth for total distance carried upfield, covering 556.8 metres. Their performances have been crucial for Spain's success so far.

Sane replaced Florian Wirtz in Germany's starting lineup against Denmark and is eager to match his Spanish counterparts' impact. "They now have an added weapon with their two very quick wingers," Sane said about Spain. "Our goal is to get to the next round and we will do everything we can to achieve that."

Sane had a challenging season with Bayern Munich due to a groin injury during the Bundesliga run-in, which threatened his participation in Germany's home tournament. Reflecting on his recovery, Sane said: "I didn't know how long the injury would last and if I would make the tournament. At the end of the day I am here and happy that it worked out."

Germany's Path to Quarter-Finals

Germany reached the quarter-finals after a stormy match against Denmark that included VAR checks and another goal from Jamal Musiala. The victory extended Denmark's winless streak at major competitions to eight games (D4 L4). The German team is now focused on their upcoming clash with Spain.

The young Spanish duo has created numerous chances during knockout stage games at UEFA European Championships. Yamal created six chances against Georgia in 2024, matching Cesc Fabregas' record against Russia in 2008 and Pedri's performance against Switzerland in 2021.

Sane expressed relief about his improved condition: "It is not yet completely gone but it is much better than before. I have no pain any longer and that is very good." His return to form could be pivotal for Germany as they aim for a semi-final spot.

As Germany prepares for their crucial encounter with Spain, Sane remains optimistic about overcoming past challenges and advancing further in the tournament.
