Germany Secures Commanding 5-1 Victory Against Scotland In Euro 2024 Start
Germany commenced their Euro 2024 campaign with a dominant 5-1 win over Scotland in Munich. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala netted two goals within the first 19 minutes, leaving Scottish fans stunned. Ryan Porteous of Scotland was sent off just before halftime for a reckless tackle on Ilkay Gundogan, allowing Kai Havertz to convert a penalty and extend Germany's lead.
Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench to score Germany's fourth goal, while Antonio Rudiger scored an own goal for Scotland late in the game. Emre Can added a fifth goal in stoppage time, marking the biggest ever win in an opening match at the Euros. Germany took the lead after just 10 minutes when Angus Gunn's save deflected off Wirtz and into the net. Within nine more minutes, Musiala scored Germany's second goal.

Porteous's red card gave Germany a penalty, which Havertz converted before halftime. Rudiger and Wirtz missed chances in the second half, but Fullkrug eventually scored Germany's fourth goal. Scotland managed to pull one back with an own goal from Rudiger, but Can sealed Germany's victory with an impressive strike in the final moments of the match.
Germany fielded their oldest starting lineup for a World Cup or Euros match since 2000 but also started two players aged 21 or under for the first time since 2004. Wirtz became the youngest player to score the opening goal at a European Championship, while Musiala scored a powerful finish of his own. This marked the first time two players aged 21 or under scored for the same team in a Euros match.
Scotland’s Struggles
Scotland had a tough start to the tournament, aiming for their first Euros victory since 1996. The quality gap between the two teams was evident as Germany scored three goals in the first half, a feat previously accomplished only by France. Scotland's performance did not improve in the second half, and they conceded at least five goals in a competitive match for the first time since 2003.
Adding to their troubles, Porteous was sent off and will be suspended for their next game. All in all, Germany celebrated a convincing victory in their home Euro 2024 opener, while Scotland faced a disappointing defeat and must regroup for their upcoming matches without one of their players due to suspension.
