Georgia Stuns Portugal With A 2-0 Victory To Reach Euro 2024 Knockout Stage
Georges Mikautadze's stellar performance propelled Georgia into the Euro 2024 knockout stages with a 2-0 victory over Portugal, overshadowing Cristiano Ronaldo's milestone. Ronaldo became the first European to make 50 appearances across the World Cup and Euros. However, this Group F match was dominated by Georgia.
Mikautadze assisted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's second-minute goal in Gelsenkirchen and later scored a penalty, securing Georgia's first major tournament win. Willy Sagnol's team will face Spain in the last-16 on Sunday, while Portugal must regroup for their Monday clash with Slovenia in Frankfurt.

Roberto Martinez's squad was caught off guard early when Mikautadze set up Kvaratskhelia, who scored with a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner just one minute and 32 seconds into the game. This marked the fastest goal Portugal has ever conceded at the Euros.
Ronaldo attempted to equalise with a powerful long-range free-kick, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saved it. Francisco Conceicao and Joao Felix also had chances but failed to score. Georgia nearly doubled their lead when Kvaratskhelia’s free-kick narrowly missed Giorgi Gvelesiani.
After halftime, Ronaldo was denied from close range by Lasha Dvali’s diving block. Shortly after, Antonio Silva fouled Luka Lochoshvili, leading to a penalty. Following a VAR review, referee Sandro Scharer awarded the penalty, which Mikautadze converted past Diogo Costa in the 57th minute.
Mikautadze's Remarkable Form
Mikautadze now leads the Euro 2024 scoring charts, having scored in each of his three group-stage matches. He joins an elite group of players who have achieved this feat, including Michel Platini (1984), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004), and Ronaldo (2021).
Georgia is only the second European team to secure their first win at either the World Cup or Euros against Portugal. The first was Greece in 2004, who went on to win the tournament after defeating Portugal twice.
Defensive Concerns for Portugal
Despite boasting stars like Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Rafael Leao, Portugal has defensive issues to address before the knockout stage. They have conceded the opening goal in two of their three group-stage matches at this Euros.
This defeat equalled Portugal’s heaviest loss at the Euros, matching their 4-2 defeat against Germany in Euro 2020 and a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in 2008.
A frustrated Ronaldo was substituted with over 20 minutes remaining as Nelson Semedo and Conceicao came close to scoring late on. However, Portugal ultimately limped into the knockout rounds following this unexpected defeat.
