Gary Rowett Takes Helm As Birmingham Interim Manager During Mowbray's Extended Leave
In a significant development at Birmingham City FC, the club has announced the return of Gary Rowett as interim manager following Tony Mowbray's extended medical leave. Mowbray, who took over from Wayne Rooney in January, had initially stepped down for a month to undergo medical treatment. However, it has now been confirmed that he will not resume his duties until the pre-season of 2024/25, necessitating Rowett's appointment.
Rowett, who previously managed Birmingham between 2014 and 2016, comes back to St Andrews after leaving Millwall in October. His return is timely as the Blues fight to stay out of the relegation zone, currently sitting just above the bottom three on goal difference with only eight games left in the season.

The club's official statement on March 19, 2024, highlighted that Mowbray's decision to extend his leave played a crucial role in bringing Rowett back. Tom Wagner, Birmingham co-owner and chairman of the board, expressed confidence in Rowett's leadership abilities and assured him of the club's full support during this critical period.
While Mowbray and assistant Mark Venus will be absent until the next season, first-team coaches Ashley Cole and Peter Shuttleworth, along with goalkeeper coach Maik Taylor, will continue in their current roles. Rowett is set to lead the team from the touchline in their upcoming match against QPR, a crucial encounter for both teams struggling at the lower end of the table.
This managerial change comes at a pivotal time for Birmingham City FC as they aim to secure their Championship status. With Rowett's previous experience and familiarity with the club, fans and stakeholders alike will be hopeful that he can steer the team away from relegation troubles.
