Erik Ten Hag Reveals Decision On Man Utd Future During Ibiza Holiday

Erik ten Hag disclosed that his future with Manchester United was decided while he was on holiday in Ibiza, despite not yet agreeing to a contract extension at Old Trafford. The Dutch manager's position was uncertain following a disappointing 2023-24 season, where the team finished eighth in the Premier League, their lowest in history.

However, Ten Hag did lead United to FA Cup success with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final at Wembley. The club's new co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, reportedly considered several candidates to replace Ten Hag, including former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.

Ten Hag confirmed these discussions before United officials visited him to affirm his continued role and their intention to extend his stay. "The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza," Ten Hag told Dutch TV channel NOS. "They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me."

He added that Ineos, the new owners, took their time as they are new to football. "It's normal to reflect on the season. It's no secret that they talked with multiple candidates," Ten Hag said. He noted that such practices are uncommon in the Netherlands, where talking to another club while a manager is still in place is not allowed. "But in England, the rules and laws are different," he remarked.

Manchester United informed Ten Hag that they had spoken with Tuchel but concluded that they already had the best manager for the job. "We had a good discussion and various topics were discussed," Ten Hag stated. "One of the conclusions is that we will extend the contract, but we still have to reach an agreement."
