England Faces Tough Road Ahead After Goalless Draw With Slovenia At Euro 2024
Gareth Southgate acknowledged that England's journey at Euro 2024 has been challenging so far. Despite a goalless draw against Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday, he tried to focus on the positives. This result secured England's top spot in Group C, ahead of Denmark, who also drew 0-0 with Serbia.
England's front three, consisting of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden, managed only two shots on target and had just nine touches in Slovenia's penalty area. The Three Lions faced heavy criticism after their 1-1 draw with Denmark last week. Some fans even booed following the full-time whistle in this game.

Southgate insisted his team performed better in their final group match. "I thought we were much-improved with the ball," he told ITV. "We've created some good openings. At the moment, it's hard work for us. We're not quite getting that break in front of goal."
He praised the discipline shown by his players to keep a clean sheet, which ensured they topped the group. Southgate also noted the strange environment they were playing in but emphasized their desire to win, as evidenced by the attacking changes made during the game.
The England manager commended substitutes Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, and Anthony Gordon for their performances off the bench. He also explained his decision to replace Conor Gallagher at half-time, who was the only change from the Denmark game.
"They're really young players," Southgate said. "We're balancing blooding them in a difficult environment, but they used the ball really well for us." He added that starting with Gallagher helped press better at the beginning of the game.
Looking Ahead
England now awaits their last-16 opponents, which will either be the Netherlands or the third-placed team from Group E. The Euro 2020 finalists have avoided facing Germany, Spain, Portugal, and France in this half of the draw.
However, Southgate dismissed any notion that England has an easier path ahead. "We have to take it a step at a time," he said. "This was an improvement, but we've got to improve to win in the next round clearly."
He stressed that topping the group was their initial objective and acknowledged that any upcoming match would be tough regardless of their opponent.
"We shouldn't be seduced by which half of the draw we're in," Southgate concluded.
