Bellingham Highlights Need For England To Capitalise On Euro 2024 Heroics

Jude Bellingham expressed his delight after his dramatic last-minute goal for England, but he remains cautious about its long-term significance at Euro 2024. The Real Madrid midfielder scored a spectacular overhead kick in the 94th minute against Slovakia, equalising Ivan Schranz's first-half goal and pushing the match into extra time.

Harry Kane then headed in a goal just 50 seconds into extra time, securing a 2-1 victory for Gareth Southgate's team and advancing them to the quarter-finals. Despite celebrating this pivotal moment, Bellingham emphasised that England must build on this momentum to progress further in the tournament.

England's Euro 2024 Strategy Call

Bellingham remarked on UEFA's official website, "It's 20 or 30 seconds until we're out of the European Championship and the mood now is a massive difference, and what it can do for the team going forward." He added that while it was a significant moment, its true importance would only be clear if they win the cup.

Bellingham's equaliser came at 94 minutes and 34 seconds, marking the latest goal in England's European Championship history. It was also their first shot on target during the game in Gelsenkirchen. Reflecting on his late strike, Bellingham said, "It's got to be up there. There's a few nice ones, ones that mean a lot to me personally, but this one was so important."

England will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Dusseldorf. Southgate’s squad is expected to improve their performance. Bellingham acknowledged that such expectations weigh heavily on the team but noted that moments like their match against Slovakia provide relief.

Pressure and Relief

"You're 30 seconds away from going home, feeling like you've let your nation down," Bellingham said. "And one kick of the ball and everything's great. It's a feeling I don't want to be in, but when it comes, it's a great feeling." He added that playing for England brings immense pressure but scoring goals offers him a release and joy.

The young midfielder concluded by highlighting how crucial it is for England to capitalise on their current form and strive for success in Germany. The next two weeks will determine how significant his last-minute heroics truly are.
