England Faces Criticism Due To High Expectations, Anthony Gordon Shares Insights

Anthony Gordon acknowledged that England must improve to meet public expectations, suggesting criticism arises from high hopes. The Newcastle United winger has yet to start at Euro 2024 but has impressed off the bench, despite England's lacklustre performances.

Gareth Southgate's team topped Group C, setting up a last-16 match against Slovakia on Sunday. However, draws with Denmark and Slovenia and an unconvincing win over Serbia have drawn scrutiny. Gordon believes the team is aware of their shortcomings and expects a response in Gelsenkirchen.

England's High Expectations & Response

"I don't really care about stuff like that; I actually think of it in a positive way," Gordon said at Friday's pre-match press conference. "If people are being negative, it's only because they expect a lot from you, which is a positive thing. If we want that to stop, we just need to perform and give people what they want to see."

Some England fans jeered Southgate after the goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday, though Gordon retained credibility. Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney insisted Gordon should start in the last-16 clash after impressive substitute appearances.

Gordon's form for Newcastle has also been noteworthy. The former Everton player scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 games across all competitions this season.

Focus on Performance

Despite his good form, Gordon says he won't demand more playing time from Southgate. "I just like to try my best and control the controllable," he said. "I think if I train to the very best of my ability, do the best I can every day, that's my way of giving him a headache in terms of selection, and the rest I can't control."

"Try my best and make selection as hard for him as I possibly can. When or if I'm needed, I'll be more than ready," he added.

This mindset reflects Gordon's commitment to contributing positively whenever called upon by Southgate.

As England prepares for their crucial match against Slovakia, fans hope the team will rise to the occasion and deliver performances that meet their high expectations.
