England's Euro Squad Faces Stiff Competition, Says Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate, the England national team manager, has highlighted the intense competition for places in the squad ahead of the European Championship. With the tournament set to take place in Germany, England, who were runners-up at Euro 2020, are among the favourites. However, Southgate has indicated that established players like Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish are facing stiff competition from emerging talents.

As preparations continue with friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March, the reduction of squad sizes from 26 to 23 players means some well-known names could miss out. Rashford, despite participating in England's last four tournaments, has struggled for form at Manchester United. His off-field activities, notably in Belfast in January, have also drawn attention. Similarly, Grealish is battling to secure his spot amidst a crowded field of talent.

Tough Euro Squad Choices for Southgate

Southgate pointed out the strong performances of players such as Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Jarrod Bowen as examples of the high level of competition within the squad. "These guys are playing well... They're scoring regularly, they perform well for the team," Southgate remarked, emphasizing the importance of on-field performance over off-field behaviour.

The England manager also touched on the situation of Kalvin Phillips and Mason Mount. Phillips has been left out of recent selections due to form and fitness issues since his loan move to West Ham. Mount's chances appear slim following an injury-riddled end to his Chelsea career and a challenging start at Manchester United.

One notable absentee from future England squads will be Mason Greenwood. The young forward was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following serious allegations. Although charges were later dropped, Southgate feels it's too soon for Greenwood's return to international football. Greenwood has since resumed his career on loan at LaLiga side Getafe, with Jamaica showing interest in his services.

Southgate's comments underline the competitive nature of international football and the importance of form and conduct in securing a place in the national team. With the European Championship on the horizon, players will need to impress both on and off the pitch to earn their spot in what promises to be a highly talented and competitive squad.
