Anderton: Guardiola's Leadership Could've Secured England Euro 2024 Win
Former England winger Darren Anderton believes the Three Lions would have triumphed at the Euros if Pep Guardiola had been their manager. Following England's 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Gareth Southgate stepped down as manager, as announced by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday.
Since Southgate's departure, several names have been linked with the vacant position. Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are among the frontrunners. Another name in the mix is Guardiola, who is entering the final year of his contract with Manchester City. The Spaniard led City to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title last season but hinted he might leave soon.

Guardiola has previously shown interest in managing a national team. Anderton, who played for England at Euro 1996, is confident that Guardiola would bring success to England. "I think the best way to address it is that if Pep managed this squad for this tournament, I think we would have won it, and we would have probably won it pretty comfortably," Anderton told Stats Perform.
Jurgen Klopp, another high-profile name, has also been suggested as a potential candidate. Klopp recently left Liverpool after nearly nine years at the club. He was approached by the United States following their disappointing Copa America campaign but declined their offer as he continues his sabbatical.
Anderton thinks Klopp would be an excellent fit for England. "We know what he's all about; he knows what English football's all about," Anderton said. "Successful, plays an exciting brand of football. I think he gets the best out of players. Players seem to love him, want to play for him."
Sarina Wiegman's Prospects
Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman is another name being considered, although she has called such links inappropriate. Wiegman led England's women to Euros glory in 2022 and guided them to their first-ever World Cup final, which they lost to Spain.
Despite her success, Anderton admits he would be surprised if the FA appointed her. "I understand a name being thrown in. I just feel that that wouldn't work," Anderton added. "Obviously, the two games are totally different. She has been incredibly successful, but I just can't see that happening."
The search for Southgate's successor continues with various names being discussed. The FA aims to find a manager who can build on Southgate's achievements and lead England to future successes.
"For me, that would obviously be a huge shock," Anderton said regarding Wiegman's potential appointment. "But she's obviously done an incredible job and has been a winner."
The FA's decision will significantly impact England's future performance on the international stage as they look forward to upcoming tournaments.
