EFL Secures Record £147.7 Million Minimum Revenue Guarantee For International TV Rights
The English Football League (EFL) has achieved a landmark in its international broadcasting rights, securing a deal worth $188 million (approximately £147.7m) for the next four seasons, extending through to the 2027-28 period. This agreement marks a significant 40% increase in revenue compared to the previous cycle, highlighting the growing global interest in the league.
At a pivotal moment when Wrexham's ownership by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney is heightening international attention towards the league, the EFL has partnered with Relevent, an American agency specializing in sports marketing, to manage the sale of its broadcasting rights across North, Central, and South America.

The EFL's collaboration with Pitch International will continue to play a crucial role in distributing the league's rights in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA), as well as other global regions. Pitch International has been a long-standing partner of the EFL, working together for 15 years to enhance the league's international presence.
For American territories, Relevent will not only handle rights sales but also engage in a dedicated marketing partnership aimed at boosting the profile of EFL member clubs. This strategic move is expected to leverage the increasing interest in football within these regions.
The deal encompasses 155 exclusive Championship matches, along with 38 matches from Leagues One and Two. Additionally, all play-off matches, EFL Cup ties, and three matches from the EFL Trophy are included. Of these Championship matches, 118 will be part of the domestic linear TV feed, supplemented by an additional 37 3pm kick-offs.
Relevent has been granted the authority to sell all EFL matches in the Americas. This includes play-off matches, all EFL Cup ties, and three matches in the EFL Trophy. Moreover, Relevent will also manage all betting rights within the United States.
Despite these extensive broadcasting arrangements, clubs retain the ability to stream matches directly to international fans. However, this excludes the 155 Championship matches designated as exclusive content.
Future Prospects and Objectives
EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch expressed optimism about the new agreements. He emphasized that these partnerships not only secure guaranteed revenue levels but also offer an excellent opportunity to further establish the EFL as a leading football brand globally. With Pitch and Relevent's deep understanding of global TV rights markets and their enthusiastic teams, there is a strong expectation to deliver substantial value to clubs while expanding EFL football's audience reach outside the UK.
This strategic expansion into international markets underscores the EFL's commitment to enhancing its global footprint and providing fans worldwide with access to its thrilling football action. As these partnerships unfold over the coming seasons, they promise to elevate the profile of EFL clubs internationally and captivate a broader audience with the excitement of English football.
