Eddie Howe Calls For Compassion From FA On Sandro Tonali's Betting Charges

Newcastle United's head coach, Eddie Howe, has made a public appeal to the Football Association (FA), urging leniency in the case of midfielder Sandro Tonali, who faces charges related to betting offences. The 23-year-old Italian, who joined Newcastle in a £55 million move from AC Milan last summer, is currently under a 10-month worldwide suspension handed down by the Italian Football Federation in October, after he confessed to violating gambling regulations.

Tonali is accused of breaching FA rule E8 by betting on matches 50 times between August 12 and October 12 last year. Despite this, Howe has highlighted Tonali's ongoing battle with a gambling addiction, as confirmed by his agent Giuseppe Riso, and stressed the importance of addressing the root of the problem rather than imposing additional punitive measures.

Howe Seeks FA Compassion for Tonali

The FA disclosed the charge against Tonali on March 28, 2024, emphasizing the need for understanding and support for individuals struggling with gambling issues. Howe expressed his concern over the potential for an extended ban that could further delay Tonali's return to football but remains hopeful that no additional consequences will befall his player.

Tonali's initial 18-month ban was reduced to 10 months on the condition that he undergo treatment for his addiction and engage in public speaking in Italy to educate young players about the risks associated with gambling. Although he is currently permitted to train with Newcastle, he is ineligible to play until the end of August.

Howe shared insights into Tonali's rehabilitation process, noting his regular attendance at support meetings in both Italy and England. He praised Tonali's mental resilience, positive influence as a teammate, and improved English skills, which have enhanced his communication with fellow players. Howe remains optimistic about Tonali's eventual return to competitive play and his potential impact on the team.

Newcastle United is set to face West Ham in an upcoming Premier League match on Saturday, with Tonali continuing to train alongside his teammates despite being unable to participate in official games until his suspension concludes.
