Ecuador Parts Ways With Coach Felix Sanchez After Copa America Departure

Ecuador have dismissed head coach Felix Sanchez following their 4-2 penalty shoot-out loss to Argentina in the Copa America quarter-finals. Kevin Rodriguez's stoppage-time goal levelled the score after Lisandro Martinez's first-half strike, but Emiliano Martinez emerged as the hero for Argentina. Despite Lionel Messi missing the first penalty, the goalkeeper saved two of Ecuador's attempts, ensuring their exit from the tournament.

After the defeat, Sanchez chose to highlight the team's accomplishments during the tournament. "We managed to advance from the group stage to the knockouts," Sanchez said. "I have congratulated the players even if we weren't able to progress. I think they deserve the credit, that is my opinion, but I think that in the next edition of this tournament, we'll get here with a more experienced team."

Ecuador Sacks Coach Sanchez

Sanchez took over as head coach in 2023 with a four-year contract. He had previously led Qatar to their first Asian Cup title in 2019. Despite an impressive run in 2026 World Cup qualifying, where Ecuador sits fifth above Brazil, Chile and Peru, Sanchez has been relieved of his duties.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) expressed gratitude towards Sanchez and his coaching staff for their efforts and professionalism. In a statement, FEF said: "We thank Felix and his coaching staff for their work and professionalism and wish him success in his future endeavours."

Sanchez acknowledged that his squad was young and suggested that experience would benefit them in future tournaments. "Maybe the results were unfair, but I know that we have to believe in this group of players," he added.

Despite being knocked out of Copa America, Ecuador's performance under Sanchez has shown promise. The team’s current standing in World Cup qualifying reflects significant progress.

La Tricolor fans remain hopeful for better outcomes with a more seasoned team in upcoming competitions.

Sanchez’s tenure may have ended prematurely, but his contributions laid a foundation for future success. His focus on developing young talent could pay dividends as these players gain more experience.
