Dorival Junior Urges Patience With Brazil's Rebuild After Copa America Exit

Dorival Junior has requested patience as he continues to overhaul the Brazil national team following their Copa America exit. Brazil, who have won the Copa America nine times, were eliminated after a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Uruguay in Las Vegas. The match ended 0-0, and Brazil struggled without the suspended Vinicius Junior.

The coach, appointed in January, left out several key players for the tournament. Neymar was also absent due to injury. Dorival emphasised that rebuilding the team will take time. "We are undergoing a very important renovation or reinvention of this team," he said. "I have only coached this team for eight matches and this is a process that we have to go through."

Brazil's campaign was marked by disappointment and inconsistency. Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz missed their penalties, contributing to Brazil's early exit. Despite these setbacks, Dorival remains focused on long-term goals.

Currently, Brazil sits sixth in the South American qualification standings for the 2026 World Cup. Dorival acknowledges the need for improvement: "We have a lot of room to continue growing, evolving, improving and our main objective now is to qualify for the World Cup." He added, "Right now we are sixth in the standings; we are not comfortable with that."

Dorival pointed to Uruguay's resurgence under Marcelo Bielsa as an example of successful long-term projects. "I think the Uruguayan national team has a pattern, a very well-defined pattern," he noted. "They have been working for a long time together. They had some problems at first; they corrected them."

Learning from Mistakes

Dorival believes Brazil can achieve similar success but needs time to make necessary adjustments. "We had some issues at the beginning of the tournament," he admitted. "I think we corrected plenty of mistakes." He acknowledged that it is challenging given the limited time they had to work together but remains optimistic about future improvements.

Dorival remains confident that with more time, Brazil will correct their course and achieve better results. "I think we'll have some more time in the future," he concluded.
