France's Deschamps Shields Euro 2024 Tactics From Leaks Ahead Of Spain Clash

France's coach Didier Deschamps has been taking measures to prevent leaks of his tactical plans at Euro 2024, according to midfielder Adrien Rabiot. Les Bleus are gearing up to face Spain in the semi-finals on Tuesday, marking their fourth semi-final appearance in six major tournaments under Deschamps.

Reports from France indicated that Deschamps only informed his players of the starting lineup for Friday's quarter-final against Portugal while they were on their way to the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg. It has been suggested that team news and tactical details have leaked multiple times during the tournament, prompting Deschamps to keep his own players uninformed until the last moment.

Deschamps Hides Tactics for Euro 2024

Rabiot confirmed this situation, stating: "It is more in relation to hiding things from you than in relation to us. Inevitably, there is collateral damage. It's difficult for the coach when he's trying to implement his strategy because the information leaks out when training is barely over."

The midfielder added: "It is not nice to see that when you really work hard on something, that at the end of the session, the media have already caught wind of it." He emphasised that these leaks are detrimental as they reveal their strategies to opponents prematurely.

"It's a shame for us and also for you because when it leaks, it tips off the opponents about things we're trying to work on," Rabiot said. "We're trying to keep things up our sleeve right until the last minute, right until kick-off."

Adaptability and Formation Changes

Deschamps has been experimenting with different formations with his team. Rabiot noted: "The coach has been trying to cover his tracks. He's worked on different formations with us. But even if he changes the formation at the last minute, we know exactly what we need to do in each of these formations."

"You always must have the ability to adapt," he added, highlighting the importance of flexibility in their approach.

Similar Issues Faced by England

France is not alone in facing issues with media leaks. England's manager Gareth Southgate expressed frustration over similar problems. Before their quarter-final match against Switzerland, Southgate lamented how their switch to a 3-4-3 formation was made public ahead of time.

After England's 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory, Southgate commented: "Our tactical plan for the game was shared three days before. We live in an amazing world where it's so difficult for us because any element of surprise you might have is gone three days before. It's quite incredible really."

The challenges faced by both France and England highlight a broader issue within modern football where maintaining secrecy around tactics has become increasingly difficult due to media scrutiny and leaks.

As France prepares for their crucial semi-final clash against Spain, Deschamps' efforts to maintain strategic secrecy will be put to the test once again.
