'No Second Chances' - Deschamps Aims For France's Uplift In Euro 2024
Didier Deschamps has called on France to improve their goal-scoring as they head into the Euro 2024 knockout stages. Despite being one of the favourites, France finished second behind Austria in Group D. They narrowly won against Ralf Rangnick's team due to an own goal but were held to draws by the Netherlands and Poland.
Deschamps acknowledged their lacklustre group stage performance but expressed confidence in a better showing against Belgium in the round of 16. "I'm doing my best to put a team forward that's in the best position possible to give the opposition a run for their money and to be strong at the back," he said. "We're in a new phase of the competition—a competition within a competition. There are no second chances now."

The French coach emphasised that teams advancing are stronger than those eliminated. He stressed the importance of being clinical in front of goal, stating, "If you want to win, you have to score—and that's not been what we've been doing. That happens to the best of us and the best goalscorers."
Reflecting on France's exit from Euro 2020, where they lost to Switzerland on penalties after squandering a two-goal lead, Deschamps is determined not to repeat past mistakes. He assured fans that preparations for potential penalty shoot-outs are thorough. "We have info about our opponents, and we also know who our own players are," he added.
Deschamps highlighted that penalty takers can change based on circumstances. "If you look at the last penalty shoot-out we did, there were seven changes between the players who were meant to take them and those who could," he explained. His objective remains clear: avoid letting matches go to penalties.
France's journey through Euro 2024 has been challenging so far, but Deschamps remains focused on improving their performance as they face tougher opponents in the knockout rounds.
