Denmark's Coach Kasper Hjulmand Resigns After Euro 2024 Departure

Kasper Hjulmand has stepped down as Denmark's head coach after the team's last-16 exit at Euro 2024. Denmark managed to advance from Group C in Germany with three draws but were defeated 2-0 by hosts Germany in a round-of-16 match marked by several controversial VAR decisions.

Hjulmand's tenure began in 2020 following Age Hareide's departure. His first tournament was his most successful, leading Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, where they lost to England in extra time. However, recent performances have been disappointing, including a group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Hjulmand Resigns Post-Euro 2024

The team's performance at Euro 2024 mirrored their struggles at the 2022 World Cup. Despite advancing from the group stage, their journey ended prematurely against Germany. This marked Denmark's second consecutive underwhelming tournament performance.

In a statement released on Friday, Hjulmand expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach the national team. "It has been an incredible honour and privilege to be allowed to coach our national team for four years," he said.

Reflecting on his tenure, Hjulmand acknowledged the support he received and his efforts to unite the team and fans. "I have given everything I had to achieve success and to get the people to rally around the team," he stated.

Hjulmand believes that a new leader is needed for Denmark's future success. He mentioned that looking ahead to the next World Cup, it would be best for someone else to bring fresh ideas and lead the team forward.

"When I look two years ahead to the World Cup, I can feel that it will be best for the team that there is a new face and new ideas who can write a new big chapter for this fantastic team," Hjulmand explained.

He emphasised that his decision was made with the team's best interests in mind. "It's not about me. It's about what's best for the team," he concluded.

Hjulmand's departure marks a significant change for Danish football as they prepare for future challenges. The search for a new head coach will be crucial in shaping Denmark's path forward.

The Danish Football Association will now begin looking for Hjulmand’s successor who can build on his legacy and guide Denmark towards future successes on the international stage.
