Ex-Footballer Dani Alves Sentenced To Four And A Half Years For Sexual Assault

Former Brazil and Barcelona footballer Dani Alves has been handed a prison sentence of four years and six months by a Spanish court for a sexual assault incident. The conviction stems from an event that took place on New Year's Eve 2022, in a high-end nightclub in Barcelona. Alves, who has been in detention since his arrest in January 2023, was found guilty of assaulting a woman in the establishment's bathroom.

The court has also ordered Alves to compensate the victim with 150,000 euros (approximately £128,000) and to cover their legal expenses. The Audiencia de Barcelona released a statement on Thursday detailing the sentence and highlighting that the judgment was based on the proven lack of consent from the victim, supported by evidence beyond their testimony.

Throughout the trial, which concluded on February 7, Alves maintained his innocence, asserting that the encounter was consensual. Despite this, the court's decision stands, though Alves retains the right to appeal to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia. However, he is required to remain in custody pending the outcome of any appeal.

The court also dismissed arguments from Alves' defence regarding his alleged intoxication at the time of the incident, stating that alcohol consumption did not impact his cognitive abilities in a legally significant manner.

Dani Alves is renowned for his illustrious football career, having made over 400 appearances for Barcelona and winning the Champions League three times with the club. His career also includes stints at Juventus, Paris St Germain, and Sao Paulo. On the international stage, Alves has earned 126 caps for Brazil and has been part of three World Cup squads.

The case against Alves has concluded with a significant prison sentence and financial penalties, marking a notable moment in both legal and sports circles. As he faces this conviction, his right to appeal offers a next step in the legal process, but for now, he remains under custody as per Thursday's verdict.
