Daley Blind Embraces 'Different' Role At Euro 2024 Despite Less Playtime
Daley Blind is embracing a more supportive role for the Netherlands at Euro 2024, despite limited playing time. The 34-year-old defender, participating in his fourth major tournament with the Oranje, has only played briefly in the current competition. His sole appearance was for the final minute of the 3-0 victory over Romania in the round of 16.
Blind was informed about his reduced role before the tournament began. Head coach Ronald Koeman discussed this with him, encouraging Blind to use his extensive experience to support younger players. "It's different, and it takes some getting used to," Blind said during a press conference on Thursday. "In this role, you try to help your teammates, keeping them sharp and motivated."

The Girona defender acknowledged that while he would prefer to play more, he understands the coach's decision. "You want to play yourself, of course, but it is a choice the coach has made, and I try to be a helping hand where necessary," he added. Despite knowing his limited role beforehand, Blind expressed that it never diminished his desire to participate in the tournament.
The Netherlands are preparing for a quarter-final clash against Turkiye in Berlin on Saturday. The winner will face either England or Switzerland in the semi-finals. The Oranje aim to reach this stage for the first time since 2004. "Hopefully, it will be a great match," Blind commented. "Turkiye bring a lot of emotion and passion, so we'll have to be wary of that."
Blind emphasised the significance of playing for the Dutch team at such a high level event. "It's a great honour to play for the Dutch team, and certainly at a final tournament," he stated. He also noted that quarter-finals at major tournaments are always challenging.
Despite his limited playing time, Blind remains committed to contributing off the field by supporting his teammates and maintaining their morale throughout Euro 2024.
