Ellis Simms' Hat-Trick Ends Maidstone’s Historic FA Cup Run Against Coventry
Ellis Simms' remarkable first-half hat-trick propelled Coventry City into the FA Cup quarter-finals, marking their first appearance at this stage since 2009. The Sky Blues secured a commanding 5-0 victory over Maidstone, effectively ending the latter's extraordinary journey in the competition. Fabio Tavares contributed to the win with a late double, ensuring a comprehensive triumph for Coventry.
Maidstone's historic run in the FA Cup, which included victories over Barrow, Stevenage, and Ipswich, made them the first team outside the top five divisions to reach the fifth round since Blyth Spartans in 1978. However, their dream run came to a halt against a determined Coventry side. George Elokobi's National League South team had previously become heroes with their fourth-round victory at Portman Road but found Coventry an insurmountable challenge.

From the onset, Coventry displayed their intent to progress further in the tournament. They quickly established a 2-0 lead within the first 15 minutes, thanks to Simms' early goals. His partnership with Kasey Palmer was particularly lethal, with Palmer assisting in two of Simms' goals. Despite a rare attempt from Maidstone's Liam Sole, Coventry maintained control throughout the match.
The second half saw Coventry continue their dominance, albeit at a reduced pace. However, they managed to extend their lead further with Tavares scoring twice in the closing stages of the game. His goals in the final minutes underscored Coventry's superiority and sealed their place in the quarter-finals.
Maidstone's exit from the FA Cup does not diminish their impressive campaign, having surpassed expectations by reaching this stage of the competition. As for Coventry City, their convincing victory sets them up for an exciting quarter-final fixture, as they aim to continue their impressive run in this season's FA Cup.
