Belgium Confirms Thibaut Courtois Will Miss Euro 2024 Amid Off-Field Issues
Thibaut Courtois will not be receiving a late call-up for Euro 2024, according to technical director Franck Vercauteren. The Real Madrid goalkeeper was left out of Belgium's 25-man squad for the upcoming European Championship, despite recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and contributing to Real Madrid's 15th Champions League title.
Courtois, who kept a clean sheet in Madrid's 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, had a public disagreement with Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco last June. The dispute arose when Courtois was not named captain following Eden Hazard's retirement, leading him to leave the squad. Koen Casteels, Thomas Kaminski, and Matz Sels have been selected as Tedesco's three goalkeepers for the tournament in Germany. Belgium will compete in Group E alongside Romania, Ukraine, and Slovakia.

Vercauteren confirmed that there will be no reversal on Courtois' exclusion but hinted that the goalkeeper might still have a future with the national team. "Unfortunately, we will play the European Championship without him," Vercauteren stated. "So, now we no longer have to focus on that. It is the job of the federation to smooth out the wrinkles. That is absolutely a must."
He added, "We never doubted his qualities or that he would not be fit. So, we must stop the matter now. Signals have been given that we must respect. At some point, you have to invest to solve it. That is certainly the intention. It's partly my job to make that happen. We know what we have to do."
Courtois' father Thierry, who attended the Champions League final at Wembley to watch his son secure his second winner's medal, expressed hope for a resolution. "Hopefully, the problem can be sorted out," he said.
The Belgian FA has yet to comment further on the situation or any potential steps they might take to address the issues between Courtois and Tedesco.
With Courtois absent from the squad, Belgium will rely on Koen Casteels, Thomas Kaminski, and Matz Sels for their goalkeeping duties during Euro 2024. The trio will be crucial as Belgium aims to advance from Group E.
Belgium will face Romania, Ukraine, and Slovakia in Group E of Euro 2024. The matches are expected to be competitive as each team vies for a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Future Prospects
While Courtois' immediate future with the national team remains uncertain, Vercauteren's comments suggest that efforts will be made to resolve any lingering issues. The Belgian FA's handling of this situation could impact Courtois' potential return to international duty.
The focus now shifts to Belgium's performance in Euro 2024 without one of their star players. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Tedesco's squad performs under these circumstances.
