Copa America 2024 Review: Argentina Triumphs, Brazil Falters Amid Surprises
Argentina clinched the Copa America title, confirming their status as pre-tournament favourites according to Opta's supercomputer predictions. The tournament took place in the United States, where Lionel Scaloni's squad retained their title, marking their 16th Copa America victory. In the final, Argentina triumphed over Colombia with a 1-0 scoreline, thanks to Lautaro Martinez's extra-time goal despite Lionel Messi leaving the game due to injury.
Argentina's success was largely due to their strong defensive performance, conceding only one goal across six matches. Although Messi struggled with injuries throughout the tournament, he made significant contributions in the games he played. Notably, he scored his only goal of the tournament in a semi-final match against Canada. With Messi potentially playing his last Copa America, other key players like Angel Di Maria and Golden Boot winner Lautaro Martinez stepped up to secure the title.

Lautaro Martinez was a standout performer, scoring five goals in just 221 minutes of play. This impressive feat meant he averaged a goal every 44 minutes, surpassing his expected goals (xG) figure. This achievement marked a redemption for Martinez after a disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar.
James Rodriguez of Colombia also made headlines by breaking a record previously held by Messi with six assists during the tournament. He created a tournament-leading 20 chances and was named Copa America Player of the Tournament despite Colombia not winning. Marcelo Bielsa guided Uruguay to the semi-finals, transforming them into an aggressive and fast-paced team. Although they exited in the semi-finals, Uruguay showed promise under Bielsa’s management, particularly in a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Brazil.
Canada exceeded expectations by reaching the semi-finals under Jesse Marsch's leadership. Their campaign included a penalty shootout win against Venezuela. Marsch’s guidance revived his reputation following his departure from Leeds United. The future looks promising for Canada with stars like Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
Disappointments and Organisational Issues
Brazil had a disappointing tournament under Dorival Junior, winning only against Paraguay before exiting in the quarter-finals. The absence of key players and poor performances, including Vinicius Junior’s suspension, contributed to their early exit. The United States also failed to impress, bowing out in the group stage which led to Gregg Berhalter’s firing. This marked their first failure to advance after winning their opening match in any major tournament previously.
The tournament faced several organisational issues such as poor pitch conditions and disruptive crowd troubles, which were criticised by multiple coaches and players. Mexico’s performance was another low point as they exited in the group stage after securing only one win. Their forwards were particularly ineffective, demonstrated by their poor conversion of expected goals (xG).
Lastly, Darwin Nunez of Uruguay had a lacklustre tournament, continuing his poor form from the 2023-24 season. His involvement in violent incidents after Uruguay’s semi-final defeat further compounded his struggles.
The Copa America showcased both remarkable achievements and notable disappointments while highlighting emerging talents and experienced leaders alike.
