Colombia's Resilience Shines In Copa America Win Over Uruguay, Lorenzo Lauds Team Effort
Nestor Lorenzo praised Colombia's resilience after they overcame Daniel Munoz's red card to defeat Uruguay at the Copa America. He noted that beating Marcelo Bielsa made the win even more significant. Colombia will now face Argentina in their third Copa America final, having previously reached this stage in 1975 and 2001.
Despite playing with 10 men for the entire second half, Lorenzo's team held on after Jefferson Lerma's first-half header secured their lead. Munoz was sent off just before half-time for a second bookable offence. Lorenzo chose not to sacrifice an attacker following Munoz’s dismissal, a decision he was pleased with.

Lorenzo explained, "One of the main topics we discuss is that we never want to be one man down. It is impossible to maintain performance with 10 players on the pitch." He added that teams dominating their opponents while being one man down were often eliminated from the tournament.
In his post-match press conference, Bielsa took responsibility for Uruguay's defeat. However, Lorenzo paid tribute to Bielsa, stating, "I think that to beat Bielsa, you must walk many miles. He is a referent coach and I really admire him as a person. It was our turn to win, that's all."
Uruguay dominated possession with 73% after Colombia scored in the 39th minute but managed only six shots compared to Colombia’s seven during that period. This statistic highlights Colombia’s effective defensive strategy despite being a man down.
Lorenzo's Praise for His Team
Lorenzo highlighted how his team analysed various formations and decided to stick with a 4-3-2 setup to create opportunities. "With the formation, we only had options of 5-4, 5-3-1 or to keep it 4-3-2 and create opportunities. We chose that one and God favoured us," he said.
He also mentioned missed opportunities on both sides but expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "Some of their opportunities didn't go in, but we also missed some and we made it," Lorenzo remarked.
Support for Daniel Munoz
Lorenzo showed support for Munoz, who felt remorseful after his red card. "Daniel is feeling a bit sad. He's a lion on the pitch and once more he got a bit emotional," Lorenzo said. He reassured Munoz by hugging him and telling him that without his efforts, they wouldn't have reached this stage.
The victory against Uruguay sets up an exciting final against Argentina, marking another significant milestone in Colombia’s Copa America journey.
