Chelsea Triumphs Over Brighton 2-1, Bolstering European Qualification Hopes

Chelsea continued their European campaign with a fourth successive win on Wednesday, defeating Brighton 2-1 at the Amex Stadium. Cole Palmer's excellent header, his 22nd Premier League goal of a notable debut season at Stamford Bridge, put the Blues ahead after an early penalty was overturned by VAR.

Both teams had numerous chances, with Pascal Gross coming close for Brighton. However, Christopher Nkunku extended Chelsea's lead in the second half. Despite Reece James being sent off late in the game and Danny Welbeck scoring in stoppage time, Chelsea held on to secure the win.

Chelsea Wins, Eyes on Europe

Early in the match, Chelsea thought they had a penalty when Facundo Buonanotte's challenge on Marc Cucurella was penalised. However, VAR overturned the decision. Mauricio Pochettino's side continued to press, with Malo Gusto's deflected effort being tipped over by Bart Verbruggen. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Cucurella's cross was headed in by Palmer.

Nicolas Jackson had a chance to double Chelsea's lead just before halftime but failed to convert Palmer's cross. Nkunku, who came on as a substitute, went close shortly after the break but missed narrowly. Brighton had a golden opportunity to equalise in the 57th minute when Tariq Lamptey's cross found Gross unmarked, but he missed from close range.

Seven minutes later, Chelsea capitalised on that miss. Gusto cut back for Nkunku, who finished clinically to make it 2-0. James was sent off after a VAR review for kicking out at Joao Pedro as stoppage time approached. Brighton applied pressure, with Adingra hitting the post and Welbeck scoring from a Pedro delivery, but Chelsea held firm.

Brighton have now failed to win in their last 11 matches when conceding the opening goal in the Premier League. This run dates back to a victory over Brentford on December 6. Despite opportunities to equalise after Palmer's first-half header, Nkunku's goal proved too much to overcome.

A top-half finish is now Brighton's best possible outcome. They remain 10th and need a win over Manchester United on the final day to avoid dropping into the bottom half of the table.

Chelsea's Impressive 2024 Form

Pochettino has turned things around since January 2024, with Chelsea securing 32 points in the Premier League this year. Palmer's contributions have been significant, scoring the opening goal in nine league games this season.

Chelsea fans may not have expected a late push for European places, but with the Blues sitting sixth going into the final day, qualification is within reach.
