Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers Charged By SFA For Criticizing Match Officials

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers faces a potential ban from the technical area after being charged by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) for his critical remarks about match officials. The charge stems from comments made following Celtic's 2-0 loss to Hearts on Sunday. Rodgers expressed dissatisfaction with several decisions during the match, including a red card for Yang Hyun-jun and a penalty awarded to Hearts. The SFA has scheduled a hearing for March 28, where Rodgers will answer for allegations of indicating bias or incompetence among the match officials.

During the post-match discussion, Rodgers did not hold back in his criticism, particularly targeting the use of VAR by John Beaton in the decision to send off Yang Hyun-jun early in the game. "For John Beaton to actually look at that in VAR, supposedly under no pressure, and say that was a sending off, I find that incredible," Rodgers stated. He further labeled the overall officiating as "incompetent," expressing concern over its impact on the game's integrity and its potential influence on the tight title race.

Brendan Rodgers Faces SFA Charge

The charge against Rodgers is based on a breach of the SFA's rule 72, which pertains to criticising match officials in a manner that suggests bias or incompetence. This comes shortly after Celtic's unsuccessful attempt to overturn Yang Hyun-jun's red card. Should Rodgers be found guilty at the upcoming hearing, he risks being sidelined for Celtic's crucial match against Rangers on April 7, a key fixture in the title race.

Rodgers has historically maintained a respectful stance towards referees, acknowledging the challenges of their role. However, he felt compelled to voice his concerns over what he perceives as significant officiating errors in this instance. "In my time up here, I'm not one to have a go at refs because I understand it's a very, very difficult position they are in," he explained. Yet, Rodgers insists that the level of officiating witnessed during the game against Hearts was troubling enough to warrant public criticism.

The upcoming hearing will determine whether Rodgers' comments will lead to further repercussions for him and potentially impact Celtic's campaign as they continue to vie for the title in what has been described as a tightly contested race.
