Casemiro Told To Consider Future Away From Man Utd After Disappointing Palace Display

In a recent analysis following Manchester United's disappointing 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, football pundit Jamie Carragher has suggested that it might be time for Casemiro to consider leaving the top tier of football. The match, which saw United deliver one of their most lackluster performances of the season, highlighted several defensive frailties, exacerbated by injuries to key players. Casemiro, stepping in as a makeshift centre-back, faced significant challenges throughout the game.

During the clash at Selhurst Park, Casemiro's difficulties were on full display as Michael Olise managed to score twice, contributing to Palace's dominant victory. With Manchester United's defence missing Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof due to injuries, Casemiro paired with Jonny Evans but struggled to contain Palace's attacks. Notably, he was easily bypassed for Palace’s first goal and then physically bested by Daniel Munoz for the second of Olise's goals.

Casemiro's Future in Doubt After Loss

Jamie Carragher, speaking as a Sky Sports pundit, expressed his view that Casemiro, a five-time Champions League winner, should consider moving to leagues such as MLS or the Saudi Pro League. Carragher emphasized the importance of recognizing when it's time to step away from the highest levels of competition, citing his own career and the adage "leave the football before the football leaves you." He pointed out that Casemiro's current form suggests it might be time for such a transition.

Statistical Decline

Statistically, Casemiro's performance has seen a decline in his second season at Old Trafford. Compared to his first season where he won possession 8.68 times per 90 minutes and made 1.44 interceptions per game in the Premier League, his numbers have dropped to winning possession back 6.14 times and making 0.84 interceptions per 90 minutes this term. Additionally, since the start of the year, Manchester United has faced a Premier League-high 317 shots and allowed opponents to generate an expected goals (xG) tally of 31.47, indicating defensive vulnerabilities.

Team Performance and Ten Hag’s Stance

Erik ten Hag refrained from placing the blame solely on Casemiro for the defeat at Crystal Palace. The manager highlighted that the loss was a result of a collective team performance rather than individual errors. Despite this, Casemiro has been dribbled past on 52 occasions in the Premier League this season, a statistic only surpassed by eight other players in the competition.

The recent match against Crystal Palace not only exposed Manchester United's defensive issues but also brought into question Casemiro’s suitability for playing at the highest level under current circumstances. While Ten Hag remains supportive of his team collectively, Carragher’s comments reflect growing concerns over individual performances and suggest that a change might be beneficial for both Casemiro and Manchester United.
