Canada Advances To Copa America Semi-Final With Dramatic Shootout Victory Over Venezuela

Ismael Kone propelled Canada into their first Copa America semi-final by scoring the decisive penalty in a 4-3 shootout victory over Venezuela. Jacob Shaffelburg initially put Canada ahead, but Salomon Rondon's spectacular long-range equaliser forced the match into penalties. With both teams taking 32 shots combined, it was Wilker Angel's miss that allowed Kone to secure the win with a composed finish.

Despite the pressure of their first knockout game at the Copa America, Canada struck early in Texas. Shaffelburg opened the scoring in the 13th minute, converting Jonathan David's cross at the near post after a penalty appeal was denied moments earlier. Jesse Marsch's team had chances to extend their lead, but Shaffelburg's shot was saved and David missed an opportunity with only Rafael Romo to beat.

Canada Wins in Copa America Shootout

Canada continued to dominate after halftime but failed to capitalise on their chances. Cyle Larin missed the target, and their wastefulness was punished when Rondon scored from just inside Canada's half, lobbing Maxime Crepeau for a goal of the tournament contender. David remained a threat, setting up Tani Oluwaseyi who could only hit the roof of the net in normal time's final chance.

Fernando Batista’s young Venezuelan squad can be proud despite their heartbreaking exit. They fought back against Canada's pressure and showcased their attacking talents, with Rondon’s strike marking their fourth consecutive goal in this Copa America. This run is their longest since June 2015. Although they fell short of reaching their first semi-final since 2011, they equalled their highest goal tally (seven) in a single edition of the competition.

The penalty shootout saw both teams miss two spot-kicks before Angel’s effort was saved by Crepeau. This handed Kone the chance to clinch a historic victory for Marsch’s side, which he did with a cool finish beyond Romo.

Focus on Improvement

Marsch aims to build something special with Canada, and their Copa America journey has been remarkable so far. However, they need to improve in front of goal. From 16 shots on goal, only seven were on target, and 12 came from inside the box. They underperformed their expected goals (xG) by 0.84 and had four big chances compared to Venezuela’s zero.

Despite these statistics, Canada remains hopeful of continuing their fairytale run against Argentina next week at MetLife Stadium. They previously lost to Argentina in the group stage but will look to turn things around in this crucial semi-final clash.

Canada’s journey has been nothing short of sensational under Marsch’s guidance. Shaffelburg’s early strike marked his third international goal, all coming in knockout matches. The team must now focus on refining their finishing as they prepare for Argentina.

Their resilience and determination have brought them this far, and they aim to keep pushing forward in what has already been an unforgettable campaign.
