Burton Manager Martin Paterson Confident Of Escaping Relegation After Wigan Draw

Burton Albion's manager, Martin Paterson, expressed optimism about his team's chances of staying in League One following a spirited 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic. The match, which saw both teams striking the woodwork, ended with Burton just a point above the relegation zone. Despite conceding an own goal by Sam Hughes before halftime, Burton rallied back with a goal from John Brayford early in the second half. Paterson praised his team's character and is looking forward to the remaining six games of the season.

"It was a great point for us, and you could argue we had enough chances to win the game in the second half," Paterson remarked. He acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the goal conceded but was proud of how his team responded. "We gave them a goal but we showed great character in the group," he added.

Burton's Hope in Relegation Battle

Despite the draw, Paterson remains confident in Burton's ability to secure their League One status. "We were the better team in the second half, we kept playing, we kept fighting, and I'm confident we will achieve the remit of staying in the division," he stated. The focus now shifts to converting strong performances into victories.

Paterson also addressed an incident involving Hughes at the end of the match but chose not to delve into specifics. "I don't want to comment on anything that happened," he said, emphasizing his priority to ensure player safety at all times.

On the other side, Wigan's manager Shaun Maloney expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance for most of the game. "I liked the last 15-20 minutes," Maloney said, critiquing the first 70 minutes as lacking. He acknowledged Burton's organization and determination, suggesting that Wigan was fortunate not to lose.

Both teams had opportunities to clinch victory, with Joe Hugill and Thelo Aasgaard hitting the woodwork for their respective sides. Maloney admitted that every set-play from Burton posed a threat, highlighting areas for improvement as Wigan aims to finish the season strongly.

The draw leaves Burton in a precarious position near the relegation zone but with hope intact as they look to secure their League One status in the upcoming matches. Both managers reflected on their teams' performances and are gearing up for the challenges ahead as the season nears its conclusion.
