Celtic's Brendan Rodgers Unwavering In His Critique Of Officials Despite Facing SFA Charge

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has openly expressed his lack of regret over his recent criticism of match officials, despite facing a disciplinary charge from the Scottish Football Association (SFA). The charge came after Rodgers voiced concerns over what he perceived as significant errors by referee Don Robertson and video assistant John Beaton during Celtic's defeat by Hearts. The incidents in question included a red card for Yang Hyun-jun and a penalty for handball against Tomoki Iwata, which Rodgers labeled as clear mistakes.

Rodgers is now at risk of a touchline ban for the upcoming cinch Premiership clash against Rangers on April 7. Despite this, he remains steadfast in his defense of his team and club, planning to "defend it vigorously" with the support of Celtic's legal team. The hearing is scheduled for March 28, where Rodgers will present his case.

Rodgers Firm Despite SFA Charge

The Celtic manager's critique stems from what he sees as a pattern of inconsistency in officiating, which he feels undermines the integrity of the game. This stance marks a departure from Rodgers' usual reticence on referee performance, highlighting his serious concern over recent decisions.

In addition to the controversy surrounding officiating, Celtic also faced disappointment as their appeal over Yang's red card was unsuccessful. Rodgers disagreed with the decision, arguing that similar or worse incidents had not received such severe punishment in the past.

Looking ahead, Celtic will be without Yang for their Scottish Gas Scottish Cup quarter-final against Livingston. The team also faces potential absences of Luis Palma due to injury and captain Callum McGregor, who is dealing with an Achilles/calf issue. Despite an inconclusive scan, McGregor is expected to miss upcoming games until the international break.

On the squad front, Rodgers confirmed Alexandro Bernabei's loan move to Brazilian club Internacional for the remainder of 2024. Despite losing a regular left-back option, Rodgers is confident in the squad's depth and versatility to cover the position, citing Liam Scales among potential alternatives.

This period presents a challenging time for Celtic as they navigate through disciplinary proceedings, injury concerns, and squad adjustments. Yet, Rodgers' resolve to stand by his convictions and defend his team's interests underscores his commitment to the club's success on and off the field.
