Dorival Junior Seeks Answers As Brazil's Copa America Campaign Starts With Draw
Dorival Junior expressed frustration after Brazil's goalless draw with Costa Rica in their Copa America opener. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Brazil couldn't secure a win. This marked the first time since 2016 that Brazil failed to win their opening game at the tournament.
Brazil controlled 73.5% of the ball and attempted 19 shots compared to Costa Rica's two. However, they only managed three shots on target. Their 49 entries into the final third were the joint-most recorded since 2011, matching their tally against Paraguay in 2019.

Speaking after the match, Dorival highlighted their tactical approach: "We rotated the ball well, went from side to side and got our attackers one-versus-one." He noted that the smaller field made it easier for defenders and harder for attackers. "Vini received the ball with two men on him and a third approaching," he added.
Vinicius Junior had a disappointing performance, being substituted after 71 minutes without recording a shot or making significant touches in the opponent's area. Dorival explained: "We put him on the side, on the inside, we didn't find the way with either. He was well marked and we had to look for a solution."
Dorival praised their defensive efforts but acknowledged shortcomings in attack: "Our ball recovery was impressive." He emphasized that they lacked depth in their moves and needed to spread the opponent's backline more effectively. "The detail and definition were lacking, but freedom was given, everyone had the opportunity," he said.
The result left Brazil trailing Colombia in Group D, who won their match against Paraguay earlier that day. The draw reduced Brazil's chances of winning the tournament from nearly 25% to 18.1%, according to Opta Analyst US.
Impact on Tournament Prospects
Dorival remained optimistic about their development despite the setback: "It is natural that if the result does not come, questions arise, but I know what we are developing." He acknowledged that improvements were necessary but believed in their progress.
Costa Rica's goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira played a crucial role by keeping his fourth consecutive clean sheet. Seven Brazilian players had an individual expected goals (xG) higher than Costa Rica's total xG for the match.
The draw means Brazil must now focus on improving their finishing and tactical execution as they continue their Copa America campaign. They will need to find ways to break down stubborn defences if they hope to advance further in the tournament.
