Bolton Sets Sights On Promotion After Dominating Oxford With A 5-0 Victory

Ian Evatt, the manager of Bolton Wanderers, expressed his belief that his team could secure promotion from Sky Bet League One if they continue to deliver performances akin to their recent 5-0 victory over Oxford United. In a match that saw Josh Dacres-Cogley celebrate his 28th birthday with a goal, alongside contributions from Nathaniel Ogbeta, George Thomason, Aaron Collins, and Josh Sheehan, Bolton demonstrated a level of play that Evatt desires consistently.

"If we can replicate that eight more times, we won't have too much to worry about," Evatt stated, highlighting the potential he sees in his squad. This victory keeps Bolton in close contention with the top two teams in the league, Portsmouth and Derby.

Bolton Eyes Promotion After Oxford Win

Evatt praised his team's performance, emphasizing the pride he feels when they play to their full potential. "Everyone knows we are capable of that performance; we have got to do it more and more," he added, acknowledging the high standards he sets for his players.

The match saw Bolton take control early on, with Ogbeta's 19th-minute goal from Thomason's pass setting the tone. Dacres-Cogley capitalized on a defensive error to score, and Thomason's long-range effort deflected past Oxford's goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. Collins and Sheehan added to the tally, with Sheehan's goal marking Bolton's 100th of the season in all competitions.

"We don't score tap-ins or scruffy goals," Evatt remarked, expressing pride in the quality of Bolton's play. He also praised the team's focus and sharpness with the ball.

On the other side, Oxford United's manager Des Buckingham faced a tough defeat, acknowledging that his team played poorly. "It is not something I saw coming," Buckingham admitted. He stressed the need for a thorough analysis to prevent such performances in the future.

Buckingham described the loss as an embarrassment, especially given its occurrence during a televised match intended to showcase Oxford's capabilities. "We couldn't do that across any area and we made it very easy for them at times," he concluded.

This match not only highlighted Bolton Wanderers' potential for promotion but also served as a stark reminder of the challenges teams face in maintaining consistency throughout the season. As Bolton aims to replicate this high level of performance in their pursuit of promotion, Oxford United is left to regroup and address their shortcomings.
