Bologna Pursues Mats Hummels As Riccardo Calafiori Prepares For Arsenal
Bologna's chief executive, Claudio Fenucci, has disclosed that the club has extended a contract offer to Mats Hummels. This move aims to fill the void left by Riccardo Calafiori, who is set to join Arsenal. Bologna secured a fifth-place finish in Serie A last season, earning them a spot in the Champions League due to Italian clubs' strong performances in UEFA competitions.
Calafiori's departure comes after he played a crucial role in Bologna's defence, helping the team achieve 17 clean sheets in Serie A. This impressive tally was only surpassed by Inter with 21 and Torino with 18. With Calafiori heading for a medical at Arsenal, Bologna is keen on bringing in an experienced player like Hummels to strengthen their backline.

Hummels brings extensive Champions League experience, having recently left Borussia Dortmund following their defeat to Real Madrid in the final. His performance last season was outstanding; he led all players in tackles won (29), interceptions (25), and total recoveries (81). Additionally, he was among the top passers with 676 passes during Dortmund's journey to Wembley Stadium.
Fenucci spoke about the ongoing negotiations with Hummels during the unveiling of new forward Thjis Dallinga. He mentioned that while discussions are progressing, it is essential for Hummels to take his time to consider the offer thoroughly. "It is right that he thinks about it, to arrive with the right motivations," Fenucci stated.
The club has seen significant changes recently, including coach Thiago Motta's departure to Juventus and Vincenzo Italiano stepping in as his replacement. Despite these upheavals, Bologna remains focused on maintaining their competitive edge in Serie A and Europe.
Fenucci also highlighted Bologna's appeal as a city where many players have chosen to end their careers. "Many players have finished their careers here; the city has this attraction," he noted. This charm could play a role in convincing Hummels to join the Rossoblu.
While there is no strict deadline for Hummels' decision, Fenucci acknowledged that if conditions are not met, the club would need to explore other options. "There is no deadline, but if there are no conditions we have to look at other players as well," he explained.
Bologna's proactive approach in seeking a seasoned defender like Hummels underscores their ambition to build on last season's success and make a mark in the upcoming Champions League campaign.
The club's strategic moves and recent signings reflect their commitment to strengthening the squad amid significant transitions. As they await Hummels' decision, Bologna continues to prepare for another competitive season ahead.
