Bielsa Expresses Gratitude To Suarez Amidst Future Considerations With Uruguay
Marcelo Bielsa has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to manage Luis Suarez, who is yet to decide on his future with the Uruguay national team after their third-place finish at the Copa America. Suarez scored a last-minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Canada during Saturday's third-place play-off, leading to a 4-3 victory in the penalty shoot-out. He successfully converted Uruguay's fourth and final penalty before Alphonso Davies missed his attempt.
Suarez has played in 19 Copa America matches and scored in four different editions (2011, 2019, 2021, and 2024). This achievement is shared by only three other Uruguayans: Roberto Porta (four), Angel Romano, and Hector Scarone (both five). Despite limited playing time this year, the 37-year-old is expected to retire from international football soon. Last week, he hinted that his passion for the game is waning.

After Uruguay's shoot-out win, Suarez avoided discussing his future. He stated, "Today the important thing is to appreciate and value the effort of the whole team, and in my case, that is the only focus." He emphasised the pride and motivation within the team despite playing for third place. "It’s about competing for the shirt of this country," he added.
Bielsa praised Suarez's contributions both on and off the field. "The level he showed in the minutes he played, the technical and physical level he showed in training, put him close to the starting lineup," Bielsa said of Suarez. He highlighted Suarez's performance in the second half and his role in leading attacks that helped dominate parts of the game.
Uruguay could potentially lose their record for most Copa America titles if Argentina wins against Colombia in Sunday's final. Argentina aims for their 16th triumph at the tournament.
Bielsa also noted how sharing time with Suarez confirmed his status as a superior player and great teammate. "Having shared this time with him confirms the image of a superior player, of a great team-mate," Bielsa remarked. He acknowledged Suarez's support for everyone on the team.
Reflecting on their recent match, Suarez mentioned how finishing with a victory was crucial after their previous loss. "After the loss the other day, there's no better way to finish than with a victory," he said. He stressed taking positives from their performance while correcting negatives.
Uruguay matched their second-best Copa America result this century by securing third place. They previously won the trophy in 2011. The team's resilience was evident as they fought hard to claim bronze through penalties.
In conclusion, both Bielsa and Suarez focused on appreciating team efforts and individual contributions during this year's Copa America. Their comments reflect mutual respect and recognition of each other's roles within Uruguay's national squad.
