Koeman Confirms Bart Verbruggen As Netherlands' First-Choice For Euro 2024
Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Bart Verbruggen will be the Netherlands' first-choice goalkeeper at Euro 2024. The decision ends speculation over who would guard the net for the Oranje during the upcoming European Championship. Verbruggen faced competition from Mark Flekken and Justin Bijlow for the starting role.
The Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper, who made 27 appearances across all competitions during his debut season with the Seagulls, will start in the Netherlands' tournament opener against Poland on June 16. The Dutch team is set to compete in Group D, which also includes France and Austria.

The Netherlands continue their preparations with a friendly against Canada on Thursday, followed by a final warm-up match against Iceland four days later. These matches are crucial as they build towards their Euro 2024 campaign.

"It had been clear to me for several weeks that Bart would become the first-choice goalkeeper," Koeman told reporters ahead of the match against Canada. "Mark Flekken did well in March [the last international window], but the choice was clear to me."
Verbruggen's Reaction
Verbruggen, who earned his first cap against France last October, expressed his excitement upon hearing the news. "I didn't do a little dance, but I did have a grin from ear to ear," he said. "I don't feel any pressure, but maybe it will come later because I have never been to a major tournament. But I feel I have the confidence of my team-mates."
The Dutch squad is optimistic as they head into Euro 2024, with Verbruggen set to play a pivotal role in their campaign. The upcoming friendlies will provide further opportunities for the team to fine-tune their strategies and build cohesion ahead of the tournament.
