Arsenal Signs Riccardo Calafiori From Bologna For £42 Million
Arsenal have announced the acquisition of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £42 million. Calafiori, who will don the number 33 jersey, has signed a five-year contract with the club. The 22-year-old centre-back played 37 matches for Bologna last season, aiding them in securing a Champions League spot for the first time since the 1964-65 season.
Calafiori's standout performances in Serie A earned him his first senior international call-up earlier this year. He also represented Italy at Euro 2024. Arsenal's Sporting Director Edu Gaspar expressed his delight, stating: "It has been a great team effort in completing this transfer, and we welcome Riccardo to the family."

Edu further praised Calafiori's consistent quality for both club and country. "He was one of the best players in Serie A last season and gave strong performances for Italy in the Euros this summer," he added. The club is eager to integrate him into their squad.
This signing marks Arsenal's second significant addition ahead of the 2024-25 season. Earlier this month, Mikel Arteta made David Raya’s loan move from Brentford permanent. Calafiori could make his debut when Arsenal face Wolves on August 17 in their Premier League opener.
Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff are enthusiastic about working with Calafiori. "Mikel [Arteta] and our coaches are excited to start working with Riccardo, and we all look forward to seeing him in our shirt," Edu mentioned.
The Gunners' official Twitter account shared a warm welcome message: "Benvenuto, Riccardo Calafiori." The tweet included a video of Calafiori meeting his new teammates for the first time.

Calafiori’s arrival is expected to bolster Arsenal’s defence significantly as they aim for success in both domestic and European competitions this season. His experience and skill set will be vital assets as they navigate through a challenging schedule.
The young defender’s journey from Bologna to North London signifies an important step in his career. Fans are eagerly anticipating his contributions on the pitch as he joins a team with high aspirations for the upcoming season.
