Arne Slot's Success At Liverpool To Be Measured By Trophy Haul, States McAllister

Gary McAllister believes Arne Slot must aim for trophies to succeed at Liverpool. The Dutchman is starting his first season as manager after replacing Jurgen Klopp in May. Klopp led Liverpool to numerous titles, including their first Premier League title, a Champions League, and more.

McAllister, who won five trophies during his two years at Liverpool, emphasises the importance of winning. "Liverpool is a club that’s synonymous with winning, and when you don’t win you fail," he told Stats Perform. He added that new management gets some time but the expectation remains to win every tournament.

Slot's Trophy Goals at Liverpool

Slot has already tasted success with Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 and the KNVB Cup in April. McAllister believes Slot's success will be measured by the silverware he collects at Liverpool.

Klopp spent nine years at Liverpool, setting records and achieving a 68-match unbeaten run at Anfield between April 2017 and January 2021. His team also had three of the four most prolific seasons in Liverpool’s history, including a record 147 goals in 2021-22.

Slot acknowledges the challenge ahead but McAllister is confident in his abilities. "Arne arriving at the club, following Klopp... it’s such a difficult job anyway," he said. "He’s done very well in his previous managerial career and coming to Liverpool I feel is a natural progression."

Patience from Fans

Liverpool's first pre-season game under Slot ended in a 1-0 defeat to Preston North End before heading to the US for a three-game tour. They are one of two Premier League clubs yet to make any transfers this window. McAllister urged fans to be patient with Slot as he settles into his new role.

"Whenever there’s a change at a club, I think the fans have got to realise that it does take time for a new manager," McAllister said. He stressed that patience is crucial but acknowledged that expectations are high at Liverpool.

The pre-season tour includes games against Real Betis, Arsenal, and Manchester United. McAllister believes these matches will help prepare the team for their season opener against Ipswich Town.

"As much as the fans have got to be aware that everything is new... Arne and the players will want to get off to a quick start," he added. The support from everyone at the club will be crucial for Slot as he begins his tenure.

Slot has big shoes to fill but McAllister believes he can meet the high expectations left by Klopp. "He’s just got to come in and be his own man and trust what he does," McAllister said. The backing from everyone at Liverpool will be essential for Slot's success.
