Argentina Empowers Young Players In Key Copa America Match Against Peru

Argentina's younger players are set to shine in their Copa America group match against Peru. The reigning champions secured their quarter-final spot with a 1-0 win over Chile on Wednesday. This allows Lionel Scaloni to experiment with his squad, hoping the youngsters can seize the moment against La Blanquirroja.

Peru must secure their first victory over Argentina since June 1997 to progress to the quarter-finals. They have only one point from two group games, losing late to Canada due to Jonathan David's winner. Jorge Fossati's side is winless in their last five tournament games, facing a tough challenge against the world champions.

Youth Focus in Argentina-Peru Match

Scaloni expressed satisfaction and plans to give younger players minutes. "We are satisfied, and we can enjoy the days, and give the youngest ones minutes," Scaloni said. "I think it's fair to have the players that did not have minutes get onto the pitch. Hopefully when we give them (young players) the opportunity, they will be able to seize it."

La Albiceleste will rest captain Lionel Messi for the knockout stages after he missed training on Thursday. Messi mentioned feeling discomfort in his right hamstring during the game against Chile. "In the first play, my adductor got hard. I didn't feel a tear, but I did find it difficult to move freely," Messi said.

Nicolas Gonzalez made a significant impact after being brought into Argentina's side against Chile. He had the most touches in the opposition box (10), shots on target (two), and second-most shots (three). His performance gives Scaloni much to consider for team selection on Sunday.

For Peru, Gianluca Lapadula showed promise despite their goalless draw with Chile and 1-0 defeat to Canada. Lapadula registered the most shots (four) and touches in the opposition box (three) of any Peruvian player, aiming to add to his 10 international goals.

Match Prediction: Argentina Win

The Opta supercomputer heavily favours Argentina to maintain their perfect record at Copa America 2024. They won 75.8% of pre-match simulations, while Peru won just 10.2%. This will be Argentina's 13th meeting with Peru at the tournament, having recorded wins and clean sheets in their last two encounters.

A victory would mark Argentina's third consecutive win against Peru in Copa America for the first time since between 1927-1947 (W7). Winning all group games would be a third-time achievement this century for Argentina, though they finished runners-up previously when achieving a 100% win rate in group stages (2016 and 2007).

Peru's Challenge

Peru aims to stay in the tournament as a defeat would eliminate them without a win for the first time since 1995. That year saw them record two losses (against Brazil and Ecuador) and one draw (against Colombia) in the group stage.
