Mascherano Slams 'Scandalous' Decision In Argentina's Paris Olympics Defeat

Javier Mascherano described Argentina's controversial loss to Morocco in their opening game at the Paris Olympics as a scandal. Argentina seemed to have secured a draw after Cristian Medina scored in the 16th minute of second-half injury time. However, crowd disturbances at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard caused referee Glenn Nyberg to halt the match and take both teams off the field.

The game was suspended for nearly two hours before resuming, but confusion persisted. Following a VAR review, Bruno Amione was found offside in the build-up to what could have been an equaliser, reinstating Morocco's lead. The final three minutes were played in an empty stadium, with Tarik Sektioui's team holding on for an unexpected victory.

'Scandal' in Argentina's Olympic Loss

Mascherano expressed his anger at full-time, stating that the outcome was unworthy of an event as prestigious as the Olympics. "The match was suspended for security and safety," he began. "At no moment did we talk about the review." He added that the official Olympic page initially listed the match as 2-2.

"Then after we were not told anything new, we started to hear things," Mascherano continued. "The referee never came; he never gave us an explanation." He emphasised that this wasn't a neighbourhood tournament but the Olympic Games, questioning how they could stop the match seven times in the second half due to pitch invasions.

Mascherano also highlighted that seven times people came onto the pitch, which disrupted the game significantly. "The second and third time you have to take a decision," he said. Lionel Messi, who won gold with Argentina in Beijing 2008, also shared his frustrations by posting "Insolito" on his Instagram story, meaning unbelievable.

Looking Ahead

Despite the controversy, Mascherano urged his team to focus on their next matches. "We turn the page and stay with the positive things from the team in the second half and look for the two wins we're going to need," he stated. Argentina will face Iraq next in Lyon on Saturday and conclude their group stage against Ukraine on July 30.

The game ended more than four hours after it began, leaving Mascherano furious about how it unfolded. The prolonged suspension and subsequent confusion marred what should have been a straightforward contest.

The chaotic scenes at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard raised questions about security measures at such high-profile events. The handling of crowd trouble and subsequent decisions left many bewildered.

As Argentina prepares for their upcoming matches, they will need to regroup quickly to advance further in the tournament. The team's resilience will be tested as they aim for victories against Iraq and Ukraine.

The incident has sparked discussions about how such situations should be managed in future tournaments to ensure fairness and safety for all participants.
