Argentina Wins Copa America Again With Lautaro Martinez's Decisive Extra-Time Goal
Lautaro Martinez scored an extra-time goal, leading Argentina to a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final. Despite Lionel Messi's injury, Argentina secured their second consecutive title. The Inter forward came off the bench to score in the 112th minute in Miami, where kick-off was delayed by 82 minutes due to crowd issues outside the stadium.
Both teams showed attacking intent early on. Julian Alvarez missed a shot within the first minute, and Jhon Cordoba's volley hit the post six minutes later. Emiliano Martinez saved a Carlos Cuesta header, while Alvarez accidentally blocked Messi's goal-bound shot at the 20-minute mark.

As the match progressed, Jefferson Lerma narrowly missed from distance, and Nicolas Tagliafico headed over from a Messi free-kick just before halftime. Colombia had better chances early in the second half with Santiago Arias shooting wide and Davinson Sanchez heading over from a James Rodriguez corner.
Camilo Vargas saved Angel Di Maria's effort from a tight angle before Messi left the field in tears due to an ankle injury in the 66th minute. Nicolas Gonzalez replaced Messi and thought he had scored in the 75th minute, but it was ruled offside as the game went into extra time.
Lautaro Martinez had already scored from the bench in Argentina's group stage games against Canada and Chile. His goal against Colombia marked his fifth of the tournament, earning him the Golden Boot award. Combining with fellow substitute Giovani Lo Celso, Martinez's composed finish secured Argentina's record-breaking 16th Copa America title.
Messi's international future remains uncertain after this bittersweet night. At 37 years and 20 days old, he became the oldest player to start a Copa America final in this century but couldn't make a match-winning contribution due to persistent injuries throughout the tournament.
Courageous Colombia Falls Short
Colombia aimed for their second Copa America title since their sole triumph on home soil in 2001. They had kept clean sheets in their quarter-final, semi-final, and final matches back then. Nestor Lorenzo’s team hoped to replicate that success but fell short against reigning champions Argentina.
Argentina proved to be Colombia’s nemesis once again, breaking their record-breaking 28-match unbeaten run with Lautaro Martinez’s decisive strike. Despite their valiant efforts, Los Cafeteros couldn’t overcome La Albiceleste’s resilience.
The game seemed destined for penalties until two Argentine substitutes combined for a late winner. With eight minutes remaining, Lo Celso set up Martinez for a calm finish that snatched victory from Colombia’s grasp.
Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi took turns wearing the captain’s armband after Messi’s exit. Both players added another major international honour to their careers as Argentina celebrated another Copa America triumph.
