Argentina Eyes Historic 16th Copa America Win Under Scaloni's Leadership

Argentina's head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has emphasised that his team is not complacent as they gear up for a challenging Copa America title defence. The Albiceleste clinched the 2021 tournament by defeating Brazil 1-0 in the final and later secured the World Cup in Qatar. As Argentina aims for a record 16th Copa America title, surpassing Uruguay's 15, Scaloni insists on focusing on the present.

"We are talking about things that have already passed. [Winning the World Cup and the Copa America] was very nice, but it's over," Scaloni stated during a press conference. "Football matches are all different; there are no easier games than others. A lot of things can happen. The difficulty of France, Brazil or Canada can be the same. It will be a difficult Copa America as always; we are prepared for what is to come."

Scaloni highlighted that his team is well-prepared and has clear strategies for the tournament. Argentina's opening game against Canada on Thursday sets the stage for their campaign in Group A, where they will also face Chile and Peru.

Beyond their titles, Scaloni expressed pride in his players' dedication and effort. "It's a pleasure to watch how [the players] give their all. That leads to being able to achieve things," he said. "We have shown that even if we didn't win like in 2019, we were able to continue and show you can do things."

Lionel Messi is set to break the all-time appearance record in the competition when he features for Argentina. This tournament could be Messi's final major event with the national team, while Angel Di Maria has announced his retirement at its conclusion.

Scaloni urged fans to appreciate watching Messi and Di Maria play together while they still can. "It is a pleasure to see them train and play, how they give themselves," he remarked. "I am not worried about the future of Messi and Di Maria. It doesn't make much sense to think about when they're gone. Let's enjoy them now. We'll see what happens later."

Messi appears content and motivated for the challenge ahead. "Messi is fine, he's happy. I have renewed ideas and strength," Scaloni added.

The Argentine squad is ready to defend their title with determination and clear objectives, aiming to add another trophy to their illustrious history.
