Ajax Suspends CEO Alex Kroes Over Insider Trading Claims Before Tenure
Ajax, the renowned Eredivisie club, has taken decisive action against its chief executive, Alex Kroes, following allegations of insider trading prior to his official appointment. Kroes, who assumed his position just last month, finds himself at the center of controversy after it was revealed that he acquired 17,000 shares in the club a week before his role was publicly announced in August 2023.
The club's supervisory board has opted for immediate suspension of Kroes and is looking to sever ties permanently. This drastic step comes after it was discovered that Kroes engaged in share purchases that likely constitute insider trading—a serious criminal offense. The board's decision was informed by external legal counsel, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Kroes defended his actions in a LinkedIn post, explaining his share acquisitions as a gesture of confidence in Ajax's future. He clarified that these purchases were made from April 2022 to July 2023, before any formal agreement with the club was in place. Kroes emphasized his intention to demonstrate faith in the club and its stakeholders by personally investing and taking on financial risks.
This incident unfolds against the backdrop of a challenging season for Ajax, which currently stands fifth in the league, trailing leaders PSV by 28 points. The possibility looms large that Ajax may miss out on European competition for the first time since the 1990-91 season—a scenario that adds to the club's woes.
Michael van Praag, chairman of the supervisory board, expressed deep disappointment over the incident. He highlighted that such actions severely tarnish Ajax's reputation and are inconsistent with the club's values. The timing of Kroes's share purchases points directly to insider trading, an act that cannot be overlooked by a publicly listed entity, especially one involving its CEO.
Despite this setback, van Praag assured that Ajax's technical policy would continue as planned, with current personnel maintaining the course set during Kroes's tenure. This statement aims to stabilize the club's direction amidst this controversy and ensure that Ajax remains focused on its long-term objectives and values.
